Notes: In 1993 Darius Ross and his wife Pauline decided it was time for a change. Darius who was born in Poland had spent more than 30 years running his own engineering and lighting business in Adelaide. They often visited the Barossa Valley with friends and slowly fell in love with the region. The moment they set eyes on the 110 acre property near Lyndoch, that has become their home, they had to have it, signing the purchase contract the very next day.

The existing vineyard of 50 acres was somewhat rundown, but included some gems, 80 year old Grenache, 35 year old Semillon and 20 year old Merlot vines. 15 acres of unsuitable varieties were replaced and a further 60 acres planted, the current vineyard covers 110 acres. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay have been added.

Darius had not thought of a winery until he bought the property but it became a mission for him to immediately move there, he just hoped Pauline would share his mission with him. Together they have created a splendid estate. Darius designed the Colonial German and Polish inspired winery and cellar door, surrounded by lawns and rose gardens - its a real picture.

Darius is real perfectionist and was lucky enough to snare top experienced winemaker Rod Chapman, who was anxious to get back home to Lyndoch after many years working for the giants of the industry, Orlando, Saltram and Penfolds. Together they have set up a superb state of the art 500 tonne capacity winery, totally enclosed and air-conditioned it is the envy of many of the valley and Rod is also producing for a number of smaller vineyards under contract. The early wines under the Ross label were stunning. Their first show outing was in the Sydney show 2000, when they won four medals including a gold medal for their 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot blend (Lynedoch).

Ross Estate is easy to find, it is less than a kilometre up the road from Lyndoch heading towards Rowland Flat on the Barossa Highway, its beautiful buildings and gardens are under the shade of some monstrous Pines. Do not miss this Barossa winery, of which the wine world will hear much of in the future.

Directions: From Adelaide travel via Main North Road to Gawler, then via Barossa Valley Way to Lyndoch. Winery is located one kilometre from the town on right hand side when travelling towards Tanunda.
